Mirror Newspaper to Host National Conference on Salt Consumption, Honours Silent Heroes

The Mirror Newspaper has announced plans to host a National Conference and Awards Ceremony aimed at promoting public health awareness and recognising individuals whose contributions to national development often go unnoticed.
The conference, themed “X-raying the Salt: Safeguarding National Health,” is scheduled to hold on April 23, 2026, in Lagos, according to a statement by the organisers.
It will take place at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) Conference and Exhibition Centre, Alausa, Ikeja.
The organisers said the event would bring together policymakers, public health experts, nutritionists, industry stakeholders and civil society organisations.
The conference is expected to focus on the health implications of excessive salt consumption and its contribution to hypertension, heart disease and other non-communicable diseases.
According to the statement, the initiative is part of the newspaper’s efforts to promote preventive healthcare and informed public discourse on dietary habits.
The management of The Mirror Newspaper has invited the Executive Director of Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA), Mr. Akinbode Oluwafemi, to serve as the keynote speaker.
The invitation was signed by the Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief of the newspaper, Mr. Stanley Ihedigbo.
Oluwafemi was selected in recognition of his contributions to public health advocacy, corporate accountability and citizen participation.
He is expected to deliver a keynote address titled “X-raying the Insidious Sweetness of Salt.”
The presentation will examine how excessive salt consumption contributes to preventable health conditions in Nigeria.
Ihedigbo said salt consumption remained one of the silent drivers of public health challenges in the country.
“This conference is our contribution to national development by drawing attention to an issue that affects millions of Nigerians daily,” he said.
Beyond the conference, the event will also feature the Mirror Newspaper Excellence Awards for Silent Heroes.
The awards are aimed at recognising individuals who have made significant but largely unacknowledged contributions to national development.
According to the organisers, recipients will include teachers, healthcare workers, community leaders, and social advocates.
The awards ceremony is expected to attract dignitaries from government, civil society, the private sector, and the media.
