Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA), on Saturday, October 19, 2024, took the Sugar-Sweetened Beverages (SSBs) Tax Campaign to over 200 leaders and members of the Methodist Church Nigeria in Lagos.
The visit followed an invitation by the Archdiocese of Lagos Mainland to address the Archdiocesan Men’s Fellowship Retreat of the church on the health implications of excessive SSB consumption.
The event, hosted by the Archdiocese of Lagos Mainland, brought together the Archdioceses of Lagos Central, Lagos West and Lagos North.
Led by the Archbishop/Bishop of Lagos Mainland, Most Rev. Dr. Obafemi B. Adeleye, it also featured other leaders of the Methodist Church, including The Very Rev. S.O. Orobiyi and the Archdiocesan Lay President Sir Ayodeji Aderibigbe.
Others included 52 delegates from Lagos Mainland, 44 from Lagos Central, and 50 each from Lagos West and Lagos North.
Abayomi Sarumi, Senior Programme Manager, Food Justice Programme, led CAPPA’s seven-man team, including Robert Egbe, Anjola Fatuase, Olalekan Fagbenro, Simeon Hellah, and Dr. Francis Fagbule.
Dr. Fagbule’s presentation titled ‘The Hidden Dangers of Sugary Drinks: Protecting Your Health Through Smarter Choices’ sensitised the church on the need to reduce their consumption of SSBs. He also emphasised the importance of the SSB Tax as an important tool to discourage the consumption of SSBs in the interest of public health.
After an engaging question and answer session, The Very Rev. Orobiyi thanked CAPPA for the visit and appealed for CAPPA’s availability for a repeat visit.
