Mozambique: Water privatization

African CSOs and labor activists organized the first African week of action against water privatization. Africa’s civil society and labor activists campaigning against water privatization organized the first Africa Week of Action against Water Privatization from 11-15 October 2021.

The week of action, which coincides with the Annual Meetings of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which take place from October 11th to 17th, will deepen the actions against water privatization in Africa through partnerships between workers and society civil.

Recognizing the World Bank as one of the biggest drivers of water privatization around the world, especially in Africa, the week of action that takes place during its annual meeting will serve as an important counterbalance to the pro-privatization agenda. This will strengthen the movement for the human right to water in Africa, identifying and deepening the connections between struggles in 8 countries on the continent.

The Africa Coalition Our Water Our Right, which is organizing the week of action, also aims to deepen collective support for countries at risk of a range of water privatization schemes, including in West, East, Central and Southern Africa.

Activities planned for the week of action include: An international press conference on Oct. 13 at (2pm WAT), meetings with policy makers across the region to raise awareness of the dangers of privatizing water through protest marches , social media engagements and city council meetings with excluded communities, and endorsement of a Our Water Our Right Africa Coalition position statement

According to the organization there will be a virtual collective press conference that will include activists from Cameroon, Gabon, Ghana, Kenya, Mozambique, Nigeria, Senegal and Uganda. Participating in the event will be Corporate Accountability, Public Services International (PSI) and a leader from Black Lives Matter, Grassroots. Speakers will include Akinbode Oluwafemi from Corporate Responsibility and Public Participation in Africa, Dr. Melina Abdullah, The Importance of Black Lives, Grassroots and Dr.Everline Aketch from PSI. AND

Also present at this conference will be Younoussa Abbosouka from the Africa Center for Advocacy in Cameroon and Labor Activist from Senegal and Oumar BA.

Declarations of solidarity are expected from members of the US Congress, Leo Heller, the second Special Rapporteur on the human rights to safe water and sanitation, and Professor Sofiri Peterside of the University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria, among others. The highlight of the briefing will be the unveiling and release of a report – AFRICA STAND UP AND RESIST WATER PRIVATIZATION which catalogs the threats of water privatization in Africa and provides the way to address the continent’s water deficit within the sector sphere public. The report makes implementable recommendations aimed at water corporations, national governments, regional bodies and multilateral institutions. (Moz24)
